Weekends with the Ruiz's

This past weekend we had our good friends, Sean and Marienna visit from San Francisco.  It had been a couple years since they'd seen the munchkin and they hadn't yet met our youngest, so we were all very excited to have them visit.

With only two days to spend together, we planned to drive to the California Science Center in Los Angeles to check out the new Endeavor exhibit on Saturday and then check out the pumpkin patch at Tanaka Farms after brunch on Sunday.

Much to our surprise, our eldest, (affectionately referred to as 'munchkin' or 'munchkin girl'), who is normally very selective with what grownups she allows into her heart, became quite attached to our friend Marienna.  So much so, in fact, that she not only tried but also ate a Poki bowl just to impress her!   Needless to say, Sean and Marienna are welcome back anytime!

To our surprise, our Saturday field trip to the California Science Center, also coincided with a USC home game...let me tell you, USC fans take tailgating to a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL.  Seriously, I was humbled.

Back to the science center. Let me preface by saying that it is deceptively huge; there's a lot of ground to cover and alot of interactive exhibits and activities, one day is barely enough to cover it.  I'm glad we are members because there are many things we didn't make it to.  Also, check out the "A Beautiful Planet" film in 3D and IMAX; completely worth it and the tickets to this include the Endeavor exhibit.

Soon they'll have the Pixar exhibit and you bet we'll be back for that!

Here's a few photos from our day:

Does my hair look OK?

Those smiles, though!

Make sure to check out the Family Discovery Rooms! Great for the littles!

We had a wonderful time, if you find yourself in the area or looking for something to do outside of Orange County, a day trip to LA to check out the California Science Center is well worth it!

Our second day of excursions took us to the pumpkin patch at Tanaka Farms.  We hadn't been in a couple years and it has grown exponentially!

If you haven't been to Tanaka Farms, its a lovely little (well not so little now) family-run local farm.  Among the many things they offer is a monthly subscription CSA box of veggies, wagon tours with seasonal tastings from their crops, a harvest BBQ night, fall pumpkin patch, and christmas tree farm.

During the pumpkin patch they have a corn maze, wagon rides, a petting zoo, themed games, ATV and tractor rides, the pumpkin patch, and face painting.  It's a fun day with a great deal to experience.

One of the popular attractions is the Pumpkin Launch which is kind of a tech savvy spin on pumpkin chuckin' :

Proudly made it through the maze with Auntie Marienna and Uncle Sean

I think its safe to say that if you come visit our family, your probably signing up for a couple excursions ;)

KarliQ Designs: Shop Review

If you're a parent, chances are that you are all too familiar with just how difficult it is to find clothing that not only fits your child, but that also doesn't require dry-cleaning, can be dressed up or dressed down, doesn't throw your budget out the window, and appeals to your mini fashionista's individuality.

Over the years I have been gifted many a beautiful, poofy, pink tulle skirted dresses by well-meaning relatives and while my youngest seems to adore poofy pink dresses (her motto seems to be the poofier the better), my oldest has NEVER liked the big poofy skirt look.  She would constantly cry that it itched and well, I stopped trying to make her wear them.  That's not to say my daughter doesn't have a sense of fashion.  On the contrary, she has a very SPECIFIC sense of fashion.  She calls it "Fashulous" (a word I can only interpret to be a marriage of Fashionable and Fabulous, but don't quote me on that).

Lucky for me, my best friend and my girl Friday, or Auntie Karla as she's affectionately known in our household, is the owner of her very own label of clothes; KarliQ Designs.  Karla has always been extremely talented and has been a costume designer for many a production, including my own, and now she has applied her talents, vision, and skill to create a line of playful, life-friendly, and cute designs.  In her own words:

"I'm a working mom with a knack for creativity. It started out when I was pregnant trying to shop for trendy and comfortable maternity clothes that fit my petite size. Everything I bought had to be altered anyways so I decided to make my own clothes, one being a customizable dress that is now a staple in my Etsy shop. After starting KarliQ Designs I decided to expand my collection to include baby clothes. I had the skill, the time, and now my son to inspire me. Now my shop includes not only customizable dresses for moms to be but adorable clothing for the littles when they are born. I love creating something special for my customers and hearing their stories. I hope to bring my vision to life and continue to expand KarliQ Designs over the next couple of years."

From my perspective, I am extremely happy that she's expanded her brand to baby, toddler, and kids clothes and I'm even more thankful for the custom designs she's done for me, including a Halloween costume for my baby girl that I'm very excited for (but that's a post for a different day.)

And because I believe in her brand and her talent and I love her designs, I'm happy to share that my ragamuffins are both brand ambassadors for KarliQ Designs; and let me tell you, my kids are VERY energetic and active.  The items my kids are wearing in these photos are light, breatheable fabric, machine washable (which every momma is thankful for!), stylish, and play-friendly!

To give you a taste, here's a couple fashions you can find at her shop:
(My oldest is wearing the toddler pencil skirt in tribal print and the infinity scarf, and my youngest is wearing the baby leggings in tribal print by KarliQ Designs.)

"Fashulous" defined.

Word on the street is that the pencil skirt isn't listed yet on her shop but will be listed soon and available as a mommy and me fashion; this means adult sizes too! Which I'm BEYOND excited about because I've been long since hoping for some adult designs.  She currently has designs for pregnancy fashions but as adult sizes for non-maternity wear is really exciting news!

Karla has a current coupon code for $5 off any order of $25 or more (some restrictions apply) using the code "AUTUMNLEAVES." But hurry over to her shop, the code expires on 10/31/16 and she has sooo many ADORABLE Halloween themed prints you won't want to miss out on!

As an added perk, you can shop with the knowledge that your purchases not only are savvy savings but also are actively supporting small business and mompreneurship!

To see these looks and many more visit her shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/KarliQDesigns?ref=l2-shopheader-name

And share the photos of your kiddos in their new KarliQ Designs styles! I want to see!

*I have not been paid for this review, but as brand ambassadors, I do receive merchandise to wear and review.*

Our Great Camping Adventure

A couple of months ago, my husband surprised me with this amazing Vegas weekend getaway for my birthday complete with tickets to incredibly shows; including Le Reve and Cirque's Zumanity.  Naturally, I wanted to do something special for his birthday.  I remembered that he'd been talking about wanting to go camping and realized this would be the perfect way to celebrate his birthday during the long Labor Day weekend.  Specially since we hadn't been able to go camping since 2008!

In order to try to make the experience as seamless as possible, I made sure to book our reservation for Saturday through Monday back in July.  I also researched and chose more of a "resort" campground; "resort" in this context referring to access to bathrooms, port-a-potties, showers, a cafe/general store on site, and park patrol.  Since it was our first time camping with the kiddos, I felt more at ease knowing we were only a few miles outside of the nearest major city and that there was a payphone on site.

The campground I chose was Camp Williams in Azusa and for our purposes, it was PERFECT.  Even in holiday traffic it was only an hour drive from where we live, it had friendly staff, each spot was only a few feet from the creek and had a picnic table, a patrol circulated the campground regularly, you can only enter the campground by checking in and receiving the access code at the main gate (which made us feel safe), and had token-operated showers, bathrooms, and port-a-potties throughout.  The campground also featured a small cafe and general store.  Unfortunately, the cafe wasn't open while we were there, but even still, I was able to replenish our ice by purchasing ice from the store and even bought a few additional drinks and treats.  They even lent us jumper cables when one of our car's battery's died! As I mentioned; very friendly and helpful staff indeed!

For being our first camping experience with the kids, we had a pretty pleasant experience.

Upon arrival, the kids immediately wanted to get in the creek:
They even made instant friends with some fellow Campers!

Even Melisey got in on the water action; a rare occurrence!

The Birthday Guy!

As you can see, Camp Williams is also pet friendly which made the trip that much more special to us since our poor puppy hardly ever gets to come along on our trips these days!

The creek was a big hit; I specially appreciated how shallow it was so that the girls could play without me worrying too much; our baby G was particularly fond of rock collecting:

On our second day we decided to go exploring and found a trail.  It was quite an adventure as some of the trail was covered by dried tree branches and twigs but well worth the mini hike!

We found a Teepee!

Baby G and E love camping!

Pensive by the creek...

This was one of my favorite things about camping; watching my 4 year old just sit quietly by the creek as she sang, or just contemplated nature as she tossed pebbles in the water....No electronic devices...Just her and her thoughts.  It was a beautiful thing to behold.

Home sweet home for the weekend

The munchkin and Dad even spotted a snake!

One of the things that I feel helped a great deal was that I was extremely OCD about being overly prepared where the kiddos were concerned.  A few of the things that I packed that made our lives easier were:

1. Portable potty for Alexcia (we bought Potette Plus when we began potty training her for on-the-go and it has been so useful since!).  We also brought extra bags for the potty with us.
2. Baby wipes & Toddler flushable wipes
3. A large container of Wet One's for hand-washing/disinfecting purposes.
4. Horizon travel milks (I wasn't sure how easily accessible water would be for washing so I opted to not use sippy cups all weekend and just buy individual milks).
5.  Baby/Toddler Snacks: Gerber Yogurt melts, Gerber puffs, Gerber Ravioli meals, Gerber lil' crunchies, etc.
6. Gatorade bottles, water bottles, and a box of Honest kids juice
7. First-Aid kit containing fun band-aids and neosporin as well as a cold pack
8. Bug Spray and Sunscreen.

There's so much more we brought with us but these are the things that made our lives easier where the wee ones were concerned.  We also brought plenty of board games suitable for all ages and played Loteria, The Good Dinosaur Memory game (which our munchkin kicked our butts in!), my husband and nice E played an intense game of chess, and a silly late night game of Brain Games (which was hilarious; let's just say it has a very apt way of making you feel completely moronic.)  And of course, lets not forget the smores! Tragically, to my great heartbreak, it turned out our munchkin did not like smores.  However, we were happy to have introduced her to this great camping tradition and that she at least tried it (thought I did question if she was in fact my kid....)

Overall, I'd venture to say it was a very successful trip and we are excited for our next camping adventure!

If you had any doubts about camping with littles: this picture says it all...

Have you camped with your little ones? I'd love to hear some of your experiences and tips!
